Why we chose here? We wanted to visit the National Park, but knew that cell service was patchy in the park boundary so decided to boondock outside. We heard that the north BLM site was quite dusty so we opted for the south side.
Location: GPS: 33°40'36.0"N 115°48'48.9"W . The space and access are great for boondocking. While the entrance to the JTNP is only a few miles away a lot of the hikes and sights, including the Joshua Trees themselves, are at the north of the park. This is a big park and it is a good hours drive to get to the north entrance from here.
Sites: Lots of potential sites that you can pull off onto. Many big enough for a couple of rigs.
Facilities: Nothing. The nearest water is Cottonwood Campground in the National Park.
Groceries: Indio and Palm desert are about 30 miles away, and 29 Palms on the north side of the park has a Stater Bros supermarket.
Reservations: No
Cell Coverage / WiFi: Great coverage for AT&T and Verizon
Price Paid: Free
Date of visit: Jan 2015
Other: It was extremely windy when we were there. Actually for a couple of the nights so bad, that it was impossible to sleep.
Would we come here again? Maybe. You are quite close to the Coachella Valley and everything that offers, but the northside of the National Park would make most of the hiking much more accessible.
