Campground Review: Santee Lakes, San Diego, CA

Why we chose here? We knew we wanted to spend the holidays near San Diego so that we could catch up with our old friends whilecin town, and we had heard good things about this park. They have inexpensive (for San Diego) monthly rates so we decided to give it a try.

Location: The park is very pretty with some wonderful bird life and walking trails near by.  There are all the facilities you could need nearby including the San Diego Trolley line that takes you directly into downtown San Diego.

Sites: The sites are really mixed here.  We stayed in the lakeshore loop, which (of course)is lakeside, but for a monthly stay we couldn't quite be lakeside. The lakeside spots are sweet - I think the best in the park. But where we were (site 17) the sites are too cramped and there are some really tatty old rigs with a whole load of stuff outside.  This really bothers me.  I don't want to feel like I am staying in some scrungy trailer park and I wish the park staff would enforce the rules a little better.  The other end of the park (Oak loops) is a different story. Much bigger spots and much nicer rigs, but crucially for us no cell service-which would have made this a no-go as a long term spot for us.

The sites have picnic tables, fires are allowed as long as you bring your own fire ring.  The sites are sandy and it's easy to track dirt into your rig here.

Facilities: Nice warm showers and restrooms. There is a laundry on site, but it is way too small for the park, so we used one in Santee instead. There is a pool and hot tub and boat rental facilities.  They will receive mail and parcels at the front office and the staff are very friendly.

Groceries: Sprouts is just a few miles away in Santee.

Reservations: Yes

Cell Coverage / WiFi: AT&T and Verizon at the Lakeshore end of the park only. WiFi is not really worth it.

Price Paid: $700 monthly fee

Date of visit: December 2014

Other: The park is really nice and the staff are great. But it is a little bit of an odd mix of long term residents and weekenders. SOmeof the longer term residents really had untidy sites and if I was on a weekend trip I would really have an issue with that.

Would we come here again? Yes for a short stay but Santee is quite surburban and while not technically far from all the San Diego attractions, it is actually a little too far away from all the action for my taste. Next time we will try and be closer to downtown.
