Why we chose here? We like to spend time around a major metropolitan area, but still be in natural beauty. We had heard good recommendations about this park from people we met on the road.
Location: The park is east of the Phoenix area, close to the town of Apache Junction. It is set at the foot of Superstition Mountain and on the Apache Trail. It is a very pretty area. There are stores close by in Apache Junction and a better selection in Mesa and Gilbert.
Sites: There are multiple loops, some sites have electric and water, some are dry. All are paved, some with gravel, some with blacktop. All sites have picnic tables, fire rings and BBQ grills.
Facilities: Dump station, modern showers with good hot water. Good trail system, amphitheater and small ranger station. Firewood for sale
Groceries: Lots of choice, Whole foods, Trader Joes and Sprouts all within 20 minutes drive.
Reservations: Yes. This is a very busy campground in the winter months. They have overflow but it was full the whole time we were there.
Cell Coverage / WiFi: Both AT&T and Verizon were solid
Price Paid: $17 for dry camping, it has since increased to $20
Date of visit: Feb 2015
Other: Beautiful setting, very few bugs and not too dusty. Some of the sites are better than others. The first loop has sites that are quite close together. We were very happy with our site.
Would we come here again? Yes definitely. This is a scenic spot with wonderful sunsets and hiking opportunities.
