Campground Review: Zion National Park, Watchman Campground

Why we chose here? Zion National Park is one of the most scenic places we have ever visited.  We wanted to be close to the park and the town and even though it is often tough to get a camping spot here, we managed to snag a cancellation just a couple of days before our stay.

Location: Watchman Campground and South Campground are quite close to each other and both close tot he Visitor center and entrance to the park.  From here you can walk to Springdale or get the shuttle bus.  Depending on the time of year you visit you can also get a shuttle to all the main stops in the park. The scenery is on such a large scale at Zion that there is not such a thing as a non-scenic spot.

Sites: Some sites have electric, some are dry.  There is a picnic table and fire ring. Despite being warned of cramped conditions we actually found the sites to be a decent size and laid out well, so you are not on top of your neighbors. 

Facilities: There are restrooms but no showers. There is trash and recycling on site, and a dump station.  Most things you want are just a short walk away in Springdale

Groceries: Springdale has a small convenience market near the park entrance and a larger better stocked grocery store in town.  It's not a bad selection here for essentially a tourist town.  

Reservations: Yes. Normally absolutely required for weekends in the mid and high seasons.  We were lucky to get 5 nights, which someone must have cancelled just a few days before we got there. 

Cell Coverage / WiFi: Verizon and AT&T both worked well here with no need to boost signal. The coverage in the actual park is much more patchy.

Price Paid:  $18 a night for electric spot.

Other:  You must go to Zion, it is absolutely stunning.  The park is right where you want to be so even if you can only get a few spots I recommend staying there if you can.  The town of Springdale is a fun spot, with a few good eateries. The south campground is less modern than Watchman.   

Would we come here again? In a heartbeat.
