Campground Review: Sawtooth Canyon Campground, Lucerne Valley, California

Why we chose here? We had some reservations later in the month on the California Coast, so we were looking for a stop for a night or two on the way to that part of the state. We actually liked this free BLM campground so much that we stayed for several nights longer than anticipates.

Location: This campground is pretty remote from anything noteworthy.  It is about 16 miles south of Barstow, and a little further from the tiny town of Lucerne Valley.  Neither of these places are very inspiring, and there is not a lot of reason to leave the campground unless you need groceries or do laundry, as we did.

Sites: All sites have table, shade canopy, BBQ and fire-pit. Some of the sites are close together, perfect for camping groups, and many of the sites are more suitable for tents only.

Facilities: This is a free campground.  There are vault toilets but that's it.  No water, no electricity.

Groceries: None of our favorites near here. There is an Albertsons in Apple Valley, but best to bring your own food in with you.

Reservations: No Free, first come first serve.  The campground was empty excvept a host when we got here during the week.  Even at the weekend it was only half full.

Cell Coverage / WiFi: Patchy but we got a decent enough Verizon signal that we could boost to be very usable.

Price Paid: Free

Date of visit: May 2015

Other:  For a free park this is a great camping spot.  To have tables and canopies, and spacious sites was an unexpected surprise.  The scenery is pretty you get to park among huge rocks that you can scramble over.  The campground is popular with local rock climbers.  The host told us it used to be a OHV campground but when they arrived several years ago they cleaned the place up considerably and made it a much nicer family-oriented campground.

Would we come here again? Yes.
