Campground Review: Pinon Flats, Great Sand Dunes National Park, Colorado
Why we chose here: We were interested to see the Grand Dunes in the mountains. There's not really anything else here other than that.
General: Even though this campground is in the middle of nowhere, we found it to be very busy even after Labor Day. Given that and the limited number of decent sized sites, I suggest not leaving it until the last moment.
Location: The campground is right inside the park and some of the sites have a great view of the dunes.
Sites: Very mixed. Getting a big Class A in here is probably not going to work. A bigger rig should stay at the RV Park near the entrance or the State Park a few miles away. No hook-ups here. Sites have campfire rings and picnic tables.
Facilities: Restrooms, trash, recycle and a dump station. A few trails directly from the campground, and you can walk directly to the dunes.
Groceries: Nothing here. Bring food with you.
Reservations: Yes in one loop and first come first served in the other.
Cell coverage / WiFi: Yes we got decent coverage here
Price paid: $20 dry
Date of visit: Sept 2016
Would we visit again? Probably not.
