Campground Review: Doheny State Beach, Dana Point, California
Why we chose here: Even though we had lived in Southern California for several years and our business lives led us to Orange County often, we had never really spent much time exploring the beaches in the area. We decided to spend a few weeks hanging out on the OC coast at Dana Point and San Clemente area.
Location: This campground is in a great spot. Right on the beach and walking distance to Dana Point City and Harbor. The only downside is the train track that is quite noisy at times.
Sites: All sites here are dry, no hookups. The ocean front sites are awesome, if I was coming just for a weekend, or hanging out with a larger group I would stump up the extra cash for them in a heartbeat. But as we were staying longer we saved a little cash by staying in the non-oceanfront sites. The sites here are pretty tight. We had difficulty maneuvering in, there was very little room to park our truck and hardly any outside sitting area. Given that the weather was crappy for most of the time it wasn't too much of a concern. We were here during one of the wettest seasons California has experienced in a while and many of the sites are prone to flooding. Ours were not as bad as the beachfront ones, some of which were unusable.,
Facilities: They have great, warm showers. A dollar for 4 minutes. There is a dump station on site. The day use area of the beach has a cafe/bar, volleyball courts and lots of picnic area space.
Groceries: Trader Joes and Sprouts in nearby San Clemente.
Cell coverage / WiFi: We had good coverage with Verizon and Project Fi (T-Mobile & Sprint).
Price paid: $40 nightly rate for a non-beachfront dry site
Date of visit: Jan 2017
Would we visit again? Yes, although I think I prefer San Clemente. But the beach front location is pretty amazing.
