Time For A Change in Travel Style: We're Selling the Airstream
In June of 2014 we sold our San Diego home and everything in it and started traveling full time. The last three years have been an amazing experience. We began with the first 18 months full time in the Airstream, traveling around the western United States and generally having a blast. Then we got itchy feet and started mixing in some overseas travel. First by spending six months in South East Asia and in March of this year we hotfooted over to Europe for an indeterminate amount of time.
We are not tired of traveling and have zero regrets about the life we are living. Not once have we ever second guessed our decision to give up the home and friends we had in our San Diego condo. But we have decided that more traveling within the US is not in our plans for the foreseeable future. Although we were born in the UK we are also American citizens and if asked would say we are British Americans. The United States is and will always be one of our homes. But for now we have decided that we want to spend our time elsewhere.
Several factors have played into this decision. Some to do with the political climate in the US right now but also a lot to do with the lack of affordable healthcare to meet our needs at this time in our life. To be honest, since moving to the US in 1999 we've never felt comfortable participating in this profit-driven healthcare system. As we're no longer employed and getting older, it's just not a system that we want to participate in right now. Having said all of that, the number one reason for our decision to focus on overseas travel is that we are really, really enjoying it. This last few months traveling through Europe have been so stimulating. We are loving it and we want to experience so much more.
We are not sure where all this leads us. We are looking forward to spending the next few months in Spain, a country that has captured our hearts. We also plan on spending Christmas and the New Year with good friends in Mexico, another country with which we have had a long term love affair. We have thoughts about traveling more in Europe, maybe some more Latin America and we have a hankering for South Africa. We have a hunch that we might prefer a home base for at least part of the year, but we are not sure where that would be just yet. Valencia in Spain is top of the list at the moment but that may change. One thing we are sure of; we are completely invigorated and excited by the prospects of what travel has in store for us. It's a great feeling.
Just as when we first embarked on this journey almost exactly three years ago, we now face some practical things that need to be done to enable the next phase of our travel life. Sometime later this year we'll head back to California to sell or donate the rest of our belongings that don't fit with our new plans.
We have also decided, after a lot of thought, to say goodbye to our beautiful tiny, shiny home, the Airstream. If you or anyone you know is interested in our Airstream, here are some pics. We have full details, just message us. We'll be actively selling it in a few months but this is your chance to get in before we formally list it for sale.
We have loved living in our Airstream and the RV life in general. We had the most amazing time, having fantastic adventures, learning to live with less and most importantly meeting lifelong friends. The people that we have met pulling our trailer down the road are what we'll miss the most. Hopefully some of them will visit us wherever we land. We are happy with the thought that the RV life is always there if we want to return to it sometime in the future.
For now we want to keep experiencing the world outside our comfort zone, struggling with difficult languages and unfamiliar situations and generally just enjoying life, oh and enjoying cheese and wine. There will be lots of cheese and wine!
