Our Guide to The Rooftop Bars of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

Spending seven weeks in San Miguel de Allende gave us ample time to sample the drinking delights of the city. There are some pretty nice bars at ground level but here are our thoughts on the rooftop locations that the city has to offer. For the most part we only had drinks at these places so our comments don't reflect the food on offer. Before revealing our favorites here are some "also rans":

Mamma Mia Umaran 8, Centro.  This is one of the busiest places in town. It has large fire pits and decent views over the lakes and town but for a better view and tastier drinks I would choose La Azotea next door.

La Chula Umaran 10, Centro. Like Mamma Mia, this place looks a bit better in the dark than it does in the daylight, but keep your eyes on the great views and you won't mind. Once the sun has gone down you won't notice the slightly dated decor.

La TerrazaCorreo 35, Centro, has a pretty view over El Jardin and the Parroquia and has a different perspective to some of the other bars, but we found it generally lacking in atmosphere.

BEST LOW KEY LOCATION: La Pizzeria Chiquita Correo 45, Centro. This simple spot has a pretty, understated rooftop that's unpretentious and a great place to sip red wine and eat pizza. They closed for a remodel shortly after New Year's. We're not sure if they reopened as the same place.

BEST OUT OF TOWN OPTION: Chilarillo37710, H. Colegio Militar 16A, Guadalupe. Well actually this was really the only bar we went to that is not focused on Centro or views of Centro. This low-key place serves great pizza and cocktails in a setting that feels more like Baja than colonial Mexico. Friendly and relaxed.

BEST COCKTAIL: Lunas Roof Top Bar Nemesio Diez 11, Centro. The Rosewood Hotel: Being a little further out of Centro you get more sweeping views from here. It's quite stunning, the service is great, and despite the swanky atmosphere the drinks are reasonably priced. The cocktails here were superb. Totally delicious. Don't miss a visit to this bar when in San Miguel de Allende.

BEST ATMOSPHERE: Quince, Cuna de Allende 15, CentroAnother swanky stop is Quince. A stunning rooftop bar and restaurant with an up close and personal view of the Parroquia. It's a really atmospheric place with a DJ and beautiful crowd that feels very special.

BEST VIEW: El Palomar San Francisco 57, Centro. Just perched a little higher in Centro you get a great perspective over the city, with the lake in the distance. You can enjoy fabulous sunsets from here with the Parroquia as the star of the show. Some great choices of wine by the glass here, including some good Mexican selections.

YOUR OWN LIVING ROOM: La PosaditaCuna de Allende 13, Centro. Like Quince, La Posadita is opposite the ornate spire of the Parroqia but it's tucked away position doesn't afford such a spectacular vantage point. The terrace at the back however has comfy sofas and a sweeping view across the outskirts of San Miguel. A perfect sunset spot.

BEST OVERALL BAR: La Azotea, Umaran 6, Centro - Roof of Pueblo Viejo restaurant. This was hands down our favorite bar in town. There are great views, they have comfortable well maintained decor and the drinks are fabulously strong. During the week there is a 2 for 1 offer on Margartias and, for 90 pesos, that is a fantastic way to get that warm and fuzzy feeling.
