Campground Review: Lake Solano,Winters California

Colorful visitors to our site

Why we chose here? We had a week between being in the Bay Area and heading over to the Russian River to meet with family. We thought this looked like a cute little park, with hookups for the hot, hot days.

Location: The park is in a pretty spot, Lake Solano is really just a wide part of the river. Not especially scenic, but pleasant and at the weekend we rented kayaks for a nice paddle up the river. The park is absolutely covered in goose poop, which is a bit stinky and icky!  Winters is a nearby town that has some nice eating spots, and there is a nearby brewery that opens at the weekend. Davis is not too far away for a day trip.

Sites: They have 58 sites some with water & electric hook-ups, and flat level spots suitable for trailers and rigs. The waterside spots are much nicer but have no hookups, and only a few are accesible for RVs. But if we went back we would try and score one of those. Worth the premium they charge.

Facilities: There is a boat rental facility that was only open at the weekend in July when we were there. The showers are ancient and the hot water was non existent.

Groceries: There is a decent grocery store in Winters (Town & Country), and a farm store on the road out to the campground. We also stocked up at Whole Foods in Davis on our day trip there.

Reservations: Yes, probably needed for summer weekends.

Cell Coverage / WiFi: Cell coverage was poor, even in Winters the coverage was marginal.  No WiFi.

Price Paid: $30: $9 reservation. E-W-S

Date of visit: July 2014

Other:  This campground is filled with beautiful peacocks. They are everywhere and very pretty. Note they are also extremely noisy and may well wake you up with their screeching!

Would we come here again? Probably not, it's an OK spot, but the goose poop made the day use areas pretty disgusting.
