Campground Review: Sand Flats Recreation Area, Moab UT

Why we chose here?  We knew we wanted to base ourselves in Moab to explore Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. This was on a list of several different potential places to stay in the area and actually was not our first choice. The BLM campgrounds that we wanted to stay at along the river were all full, so we ended up here.

Location: This is just a few miles out of the city. You have to travel through Moab to get to Arches and to Canyonlands, Island in the Sky entrance. The redrock desert landscape is beautiful and the starry skies were amazing.

Sites: Some of the going here is quite rough, be prepared for a bumpy ride. Lots of the sites are too small for most RV's but there are a lot of sites to choose from, so if you are persistent you may find one that fits your needs like we did.  There are fire rings and picnic tables at each assigned site.

Facilities: Nothing to speak of. No water or electric anywhere, pit toilets - we didn't venture to.

Groceries: Moab has a couple of grocery stores.

Reservations: No

Cell Coverage / WiFi: Yes we got good coverage here.

Price Paid: $10 dry

Date of visit: Sept 2014

Other:  We heard coyotes regularly in the evenings. This is primitve camping.  While there are assigned sites, it is really more like dispersed camping with sites very well separated from each other.  There is no water at the campground or flushing toilets. We filled up a water carrier at the Arches visitor center, also one of the camping stores in town offers free water fill-ups.

Would we come here again? Yes definitely. This was very scenic and so much space around us, but still close to the city. Just what we like.
