Campground Review: Morro Bay State Park, Morro Bay, CA

Why we chose here? We have spent Memorial Day at Morro Bay for the last 4 years.  We have a meet up with friends and it's a great town that we love returning to each year.  This year we were full time and in our Airstream (in the past we had been in our Winnebago) so it all felt a little different

Location: This campground is in an excellent location.  It is just across the road from a marina where you can launch kayaks to explore the bay. You can walk into town (it's just over a mile) or you can get a shuttle bus that runs on weekends from Memorial day through Labor day. 

Sites: All sites have table, BBQ and fire-pit, The hook up sites are all pull-through, some are shaded and some not. Some have spacious seating areas, but some do feel a little cramped, so pick carefully.  We were in #22 and were very happy. 

Facilities: The state park has a marina and a cafe, there is also a natural history museum.  There are showers which we didn't use, but they look OK. There is a dump station on site. 

Groceries: There is an Albertsons in town, which prices for tourists.  But if you go to nearby San Luis Obispo there are lots of great choices including our faves Whole Foods, and Trader Joes   

Reservations: Yes. You will need them for most weekends, for hook-up spots and definitely in the summer. To book busy California State Parks at these popular times you have to go to Reserve America on the first of the month. At 8am (Pacific time) they open up reservation for 6 months time (i.e. for May you book on Nov 1st).  Don't try logging  in at 8.01am the prime spots will largely be gone.  Even if you are not sure you about your plans in 7 months time, it's best to snag a site and cancel at a later date if your plans don't shape up.  

Cell Coverage / WiFi: Good for both Verizon and AT&T

Price Paid: $55 for hook ups $35 for dry

Other:  California Beach camping may be a little pricey but I think it's so worth it. If it wasn't for wanting to be with our friends in the hook up spots, I might save money and go in the dry spots.  The ones further away from the entrance have less shade , so we could use solar power.  

Would we come here again? Yes.
