Campground Review: Ridgway State Park, Ridgway, CO

Why we chose here: We wanted to explore some of the pretty mountain towns in Colorado and Ouray and Telluride were on our list. This park was recommended by some fellow travelers and seemed a good base for this area.

General: This is a Colorado state park. One thing you should know about camping at CO state parks is that you have to pay a daily entrance fee to the park in addition to the camping fee. We'll add Colorado to Washington, Montana and Texas; the list of state park systems we have visited who love to sting you with extra fees. Anyway it's $7 or $8 a day, depending on the park, or $70 for an annual pass. Given our plans to stay in Colorado for a few months we bought the pass to save the fees.

Location: This is a great location, very scenic and just a few miles from the charming town of Ridgway. The park has three camping areas, Elk Ridge (where we stayed)  and Dakota Terraces at the Dutch Charlie entrance, and the Pa-Co-Chu-Puk Campground at an entrance further north. The latter has hookups and therefore tends to have more big rigs. Both campgrounds at Dutch Charlie are scenic but note that cell signal was only present at Elk Ridge.

Sites: The sites are variable quality, but mostly good, level and spacious. A few of the sites in Elk Ridge have views of the lake and surrounding mountains. All sites have fire rings, picnic tables and shelters for shade.

Facilities: Restrooms, showers, laundry, children's playground, dump station.

Groceries: There is a small store in Ridgway for essentials, but it's nothing special. Best to bring groceries with you into this area.

Reservations: Yes; the place was pretty busy, especially at weekends.

Cell coverage / WiFi: Yes good coverage from Verizon. AT&T and T-Mobile

Price paid: $26 Electric - Plus $10 Online Reservation Fee - Plus $70 Annual Pass to avoid $7 daily fee

Date of visit: July 2016

Would we come here again? Yes. It's a great park and a really nice location. Ridgway has some good restaurants and a brewery and Ouray is very scenic.
