Why we chose here? We were making the long drive from El Paso to Austin along Interstate 10. This park had good reviews and was the perfect distance for a stop.
Location: This is quite a detour from the freewqy but is is a pretty part of the state, with some good hiking in the park. The McDonald Observatory is close, although we didn't visit we heard it was a great place to go. The town of Fort Davis is pretty with some good stores and cafes. We took day trips to Alpine and Marfa.
Sites: 94 campsites, some with water and electric, some also with cable.
Facilities: Indian Lodge cafe/restaurant is in the park. Food was just meh!. We didn't use showers and restrooms. Dump station on site.
Groceries: Small grocery store in Fort Davis with very friendly staff and good choice of food. Otherwise you need to bring most groceries with you.
Reservations: Yes. We didn't have them and had to move on by Friday as the park was full.
Cell Coverage / WiFi: Cell coverage only with booster.
Price Paid: $25 (Bought Texas State Park Pass to avoid daily entrance fees) E-W-C
Date of visit: Oct 2014
Other: Like all Texas state parks, drinking alcohol outside is against the rules. I hate this Nanny approach, as I like a beer sitting by the fire. We didn't see the rule enforced, but I don't like having to hide my drink like a naughty schoolchild.
Would we come here again? Yes, if we had more time we may have traveled on to Big Bend. This would be a good stopping off point.
