Campground Review: Salida East Recreation Area, Salida CO

Why we chose here: As the fall begins it was time to turnaround and starting heading south. We had heard from others that Salida was a good base and this spot seemed like a convenient place to base ourselves for a few nights close to town.

Location: You are close to the highway here, but we managed to be far enough away that it didn't bother us. The town of Salida is just a few miles away, there is some great hiking a minute or two away. This site is right on the river although the vegetation hides most of it. There is a boat ramp that allows easy access to the water.

Sites: There are sort of defined spots here with picnic tables, but there is free parking too. Pretty grim sites, not at all level and many have broken glass and trash in them. We were happy enough with our site, but this is pretty low-rent camping. Even though there are stay limits here, I would have to guess many people spend many months here.

Facilities: Nothing here. It's basically a parking lot.

Groceries: Salida has a Safeway, which is just OK. If you want better quality choices it is best to bring stuff with you.

Reservations: No

Cell coverage / WiFi: Yes good coverage from Verizon and AT&T

Price paid: $0. We had heard a rumor that they may start charging for this campground but they would have to improve things if that was the case. I would say it was worth exactly what we paid for it :-)

Date of visit: Sept 2016

Would we visit again? Maybe, it was just OK. Location wise this is close to the beautiful town of Salida and some nice trails but the campground is not great.
