Campground Review: Lopez Lake, San Luis Obispo, CA

Our long narrow site

Why we chose here? We have spent some time in the San Luis Obispo area before but always by the coast. As we were late making reservations, staying near the ocean was tough, especially through the weekends, so we chose Lopez Lake instead.

Location: About 8 or 10 miles from the town of Arroyo Grande. It's a short 20 to 30 minutes drive to San Luis Obispo, and you can be at the Ocean in relatively short order. Convenient for SLO, Arroyo Grande, Pismo Beach, Avila Beach etc.

Sites: A mix of sites over multiple loops. The site we stayed in was quite long and narrow, we had a nice sitting area and fire ring. Decent amount of space and privacy.

Facilities: They have a general store that sells basic supplies and ok beer and firewood, as well as a sports bar and kayak/boat rentals.

Groceries: San Luis Obsipo has a great Farmer's Market on a Thursday evening, but wow is it crowded. There is also Trader Joes and Whole Foods nearby.

Reservations: Yes through their website. Summer weekends are busy and reservations are recommended.

Cell Coverage / WiFi: Nothing at all on Verizon or AT&T. Sluggish WiFi at camp store/bar.  Completely cut off from humanity!!!

Price Paid: $38: $9 reservation. E-W-S

Date of visit: June 2014

Other:  You can rent kayaks to explore the lake at the camp store.

Would we come here again? No, only because I think there are better spots to be had nearer the ocean, and the complete lack of internet connectivity is an issue.

  1. Thank you for the review.
San Simeon is just N. of Cambria and is $20 a night and gorgeous. Dry and full cell on Verizon and Att.
Cambria has a Farmer's Market on Fridays.
SLO's Farmer's Market is actually on Thursdays evenings, not weds, and always a zoo and tons of bbq and goodies for dinner.

    1. Thanks for the comments. I corrected the Farmers Market day. How could we forget waiting in line for that BBQ.

We have visited the beautiful town of Cambria, but never camped there. We'll be heading that way again in May and be sure to check it out.
