Campground Review: Mission Bay, RV Park, San Diego, California

Why we chose here: We used to live in San Diego and love to come back in the winter for the SoCal weather and to catch up with friends. Last December we stayed at Santee Lakes, but found it was too far out of the city for us so this year we decided to give Mission Bay a try.

Location:  The location is perfect. Right on the water, the sunsets are fantastic here.  Within walking distance you can get to Pacific Beach with shops, brew-pubs and restaurants. You can bike to Mission Beach and around the bay. A short drive or Uber ride away is San Diego downtown and everything that is on offer there. You can access the bay from the entrance to the park to launch kayaks.

There is a trailer park on the same piece of land and they have been compulsory purchased so lots of them are empty or in disrepair. At some point the land will be given back to the city, so the long term future of the park is in doubt. But for now they are still confident of being able to operate.

Sites:  This is basically a piece of asphalt and the sites are ok as far as RV parks are concerned. There are picnic tables, and you are allowed fire pits. We paid extra for a waterside spot and didn't regret it. There was just a wire fence between us and the water allowing us to enjoy great views and quite a lot of space.

Facilities: There are restrooms and showers, we didn't try. There is a common room we rented for a Christmas Day meal with friends also staying at the park.

Groceries: This park is in a urban setting nearby are Trader Joes, Whole Foods, Sprouts and everything a large city is on offer. San Diego has excellent Farmers Markets. The Saturday morning one in Little Italy is a must visit.

Reservations: Yes. The park is large and often has spots without reservation. The waterside spots do get booked up in advance though

Cell coverage / WiFi: Yes Verizon and AT&T full coverage

Price paid: $41 a night Full Hookups (Monthly rate)

Date of visit: December 2015

Would we come here again? Yes, in fact we booked the same spot for the following year.
